NOTES ON AWAKENING TO THE TAO – 2

3rd Aug, 2024 by Nigam Overington

Most of us have studied together the Tao te Ching, purportedly written by Lao Tzu, which is one of the core Taoist texts, now today I want to Introduce you to Chuang Tzu (also known as Zhuangzi)  purportedly written by Chuang-Tzu, (369—298 BCE) which is another core Taoist sacred texts. The Zhuangzi consists of anecdotes, allegories, parables, and fables that are often humorous or irreverent in nature.

I love Chuang Tsu. He was a rare and most unique sage. His stories, his poems and his  statements are so crazy, so absurd that If you had met him and listened to him you would either have soon left him saying this guy is mad!

Or maybe, if you began to feel an inkling of what he was saying beneath all his nonsensical words, and you were a sincere seeker of the …

AWAKENING TO THE TAO

17th Jul, 2024 by Dinishika

What is the meaning of Tao?

The Tao alludes to so much, it alludes to the eternal. The Tao is alluded to be responsible for creation and supporting the functioning of the Universe and it was also present prior to creation.

In this sense The Way is quite an insufficient translation, so really it is best to call it Tao!

What will happen as you study and meditate over the Tao and its holy scriptures – an intuitive understanding of the Tao will arise within you and you will come to the realisation that all words that describe The Tao are totally inadequate.
The Tao Te Ching begins with this very problem of describing the meaning of the word Tao.

The tao that can be told

is not the eternal Tao

The name that can be named

is not …

THE SECRET OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER

11th Jul, 2024 by Nigam Overington

A Classical Chinese book of Life.

This ancient Taoist treatise, more than twenty-five centuries-old clearly points the way with complete instructions and advice on simple but profound practices, how we can become free from the blindfolds of mind and emotions, so we can live a life of pure and lasting contentment in all circumstances.

The Secret of the Golden Flower is one of the eternal sources from where we can receive inspiration and precise instruction on how we can find the door to return to our innocence and happiness, where we can return to the divine that is within each and every one of us.

The Golden Flower symbolises the full flowering of a human’s consciousness. It works with the seed of our potential (which is surrounded by ignorance) to Oneness, the Full Flowering of human Potential and Perfection.

THE TAO TE CHING– LAO TSU.

18th Jun, 2024 by Nigam Overington

AN INTRODUCTION

Those who have known the Truth of Existence not by learning from books, or scriptures but through their deep experience of life – the Sages, the Jnanis, the Enlightened Beings, the Masters etc – all have indicated when they try to share what they have experienced with others what they have known, the moment they express it – the expression is not true. To really understand this is to begin to understand the Tao.

FORM CANNOT DESCRIBE THE FORMLESS. TRUTH WHEN EXPRESSED IN WORDS IMMEDIATELY BECOMES UNTRUE.

Thus, Lao Tsu begins the Tao Te Ching as follows

The tao that can be told
is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name.
The unnamable is the eternally real.
(The beginning of heaven and earth is nameless)
Naming is the origin
of

Lieh-Tzu

14th Jun, 2022 by Dinishika

The three main texts that represent Taoism are often cited as –

  1. Lao-Tzu’s Tao te Ching
  2. Chuang-Tzu
  3. Lieh Tzu

Chuang-Tzu and Lieh-Tzu are the purported names of the authors and the sacred texts are of the same name.

On our last online Taoist study, we meditated over Lao-Tzu’s Tao te Ching.
I wish to now introduce you to Lieh-Tzu. The Lieh-Tzu is a collection of stories and philosophical musings of a Taoist sage who lived around the fourth century BCE. Reading one story after another one begins to get a deeper, intuitive feeling of what the Tao is – after pondering over the simple stories.

A story from Lieh-Tzu

“Musician Wen learns to play the lute”

Along time ago there was a musician who could charm birds and fish into dancing with his music. A lute player named …
